Jewelry
Jewelry is a personal ornament,
such as a necklace, ring or bracelet
made from jewels precious metals or other
substance. The word jewelry is derived from the word
jewel. Jewelry is one of the oldest forms of
body adornment. The oldest known jewelry found is believed
to be about 100,000 years old. It was made of shells that were
then made into beads.
In earlier times jewelry was created for more
practical uses, such as wealth storage and pinning clothes together now it is
used almost exclusively for decoration. In ancient times jewelry
was made from natural materials like bone, animal teeth, shells, wood and stone.
Jewelry was made for people of wealth to show their importance and
status.
Jewellery is made out of almost every material
known to man and has been made to adorn nearly every body part, from
hairpins, nose rings, earrings and toe
rings. There are many types of jewelry, some are made
of high-quality gemstones and precious metals, while
some cost less and are made from less-valuable materials. These less expensive
pieces of jewelry are called costume jewelry.
There are many forms and functions for jewelry.
The first being currency, the jewelry was created to keep large amounts of
wealth together example giving a wedding dowry of jewelry designed
with different and expensive coins. Second function for
jewelry is it and was used to fasten clothing and hair such as
clasps, pins and buckles. The third function
is to show membership and or status, example the show of faith by wearing
the Christian crucifix or Jewish Star of David and
the wearing of a wedding ring. Lastly jewelry
is also used to protect and ward off evil spirits in some cultures.
The history of jewelry is a long one with many
different uses among different cultures. It has been around for thousands of
